Hello to all!

I am realizing I never quite wrapped up my blog here...but I am officially back in the states. It definitely was a weird transition from perfect weather Uganda to Christmas season in snowy Minnesota, but it is nice to be back. To be able to enjoy time with friends and family, catch up on reading while I search for a job and a direction in my life.

But I just wanted to say thank you to all of my friends and family for all of your prayer and support not only during my time in Uganda, but throughout my whole life. God has truly blessed me with some wonderful friends and family.

MTN Marathon 2009

The annual marathon here in Kampala was this past Sunday, November 22nd. I think around 18000 people ran in this years race. There were a couple of us from the office that participated in the 10k that went with it. No, I definitely did not run a marathon, but the 10k was definitely fun to do, like most races are. But lets just say running a race in Ugandan is soooo different from running a race in the states. One wave start for the 10k so at the beginning we were all just being pushed forward, it was like a mob scene, which continued to surface at the end when we were collecting our MTN water bottles. It was chaotic with everyone grabbing and pushing for their water bottles, when later on the police came and were actually clubbing people because it was becoming so rowdy. it was insane...

...grasshoppers?

Yep that's right, it is officially grasshopper season here in Uganda and you will see people selling little baggies of them all over. They generally fry them up and add some salt to them, someone described it as an extra greasy potato chip. But basically to me...it is still just a grasshopper no matter what they taste like.

Florence's Nursery School- Face Painting!!

I got the privilege these past couple of weeks to be able to work with a nursery school nearby. EMI allows for this sweet opportunity to volunteer up to four hours a week. Thus giving me an opportunity to spend time with these kids! Most of them are still learning English so there wasn't a lot of good communication, but there was definitely plenty of joy and fun!

The school semesters are different here and the kids had their last day of the year this previous Friday. They will be off for two months before they start up again. So it was my last day with them. I have done a variety of activities with them, mainly craft-oriented, thus for their last day we decided to do face painting!

The Land of a Thousand Hills

Rwanda....

What a beautiful, breath-taking country with such a tragic and painful history. I got the privilege this past to go to "the land of a thousand hills," a phrase most appropriately named to describe Rwanda. Upon arrival the first thing noticed was....paved roads and no trash. One of the most remarkable things about Rwanda to me is just the transformation that the country has undergone in the past fifteen years. I am still in the process of analyzing the progress that Paul Kagame has made since he came to power nine years ago, but there is no doubt that he is making progress, at least in the area of cleaning-up his country's infrastructure.

Examples of what strides Rwanda has made can clearly be seen in the capital Kigali:

Paved, clean roads with painted lines...

Organized bodas (called in Rwanda motor-taxis) with vests, helmets along with the telephone number of the company they work for.

New modern construction was broadcasted throughout the entire capital.

Kigali Genocide Memorial...

The memorial was erected in 2004, ten years after the 1994 genocide where an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were killed in a period of three months. Media and politically brainwashed Hutus spent these months slaughtering Tutsi and Tutsi-friendly Hutus as they declared to eliminate the entire Tutsi race. Friends turned on friends, neighbors turned on neighbors as this rampage took place.

It was a tragic time in not only Rwandan history, but the world's history as the UN and many Western countries "turned their backs" on what was happening in this small country in the heart of Africa.

This non-profit memorial serves as a reminder of not only the history that went on in Rwanda, but a reminder to prevent it from never happening again.

Gisenyi....

What a gorgeous and spectacular place. We went to this lakeside resort to one, see the beauty that is Lake Kivu with the DRC's mountain ranges soaring over it, and two, to hike in the Volcanoes National Park. Number two didn't end up working out mainly on a lack of planning on our part. This trip was kind of a "lets see what happens" trip and thus we didn't realize we needed to make a guide reservation the day before. But we were still able to see the beauty of the city and surrounding areas.

Part of our trip to Rwanda consisted of working with a former EMI ministry called AIM FATER, which is a ministry creating an institution for training pastors. They are based in Kigali and wanted some new master plan ideas and some possible future land surveyed. We were able to give them some sketches and GPS points for the new land.

It was definitely great to be able to help them out, if only a little bit.

Sipi Falls

Welcome to Sipi Falls!

This past weekend we had our intern weekend away to Sipi Falls. So we set forth from the EMI compound around 9:30am and arrived at our destination, Sipi River Lodge around 7:30pm. The distance between Sipi Falls and Kampala is only around 300km, yet when you include sitting in a bus park in Kampala for 3 hours, a 4 1/2 hour drive to Mbale on a bus, another 30 minutes tracking down the driver we arranged to have waiting for us and another hour to the lodge, then you get to our 9 hour trek to Sipi! But it was definitely well worth it! We happened to stay at a very nice lodge, since our previously cheap (aka 5 dollar a night) hostel was sold out for the weekend! So we stayed at a wonderful place for around $30 a night (sooo expensive by Ugandan standards). This included a four course dinner and a very extensive breakfast spread as well. We were able to have a very relaxing (well, slightly relaxing) weekend. The interns (aka TJ, Danny, David, Kyle, Travis, Peter, & I since Jack & Jang Won were not able to make it) started off Saturday morning on a four hour hike to see the three famous Sipi waterfalls. So, let's just say that the hike was definitely not the most relaxing way to spend the day (especially the hike to the last waterfall, which I think we all definitely felt), but it was so great to be able to spend the day in outside in the beautiful scenery. A couple of us also were able to go on a coffee tour, which was definitely extensive and so much fun!

Now....

....on to the coffee tour experience.

We started off on our coffee tour experience easily enough...just walking to the location that our guide was bringing us. And then we got there...a random home where a lady was washing dishes and we were told to wait as they weren't quite ready yet. We looked around at what appeared to be a personal home and definitely not a coffee plantation. Then we waited...

These children followed us to our destination and meanwhile we had a little photo session.

and we continued to wait for about 30-45 minutes. Right when we were thinking it wasn't really happening, they came and began the coffee tour, which turned out a lot more exhaustive than what we first imagined : )

It started off with picking our own coffee saplings...

...which we proceeded to plant and were told that when we come back in 3-5 years we will have our own coffee plant, which we can get our own coffee berries from...

After we finished planting our coffee plants, we went to another more mature plant and picked coffee berries.

Which we collected...

and put through a "pulper" I believe, which removes the berry (which they will use for composting) and leaves the coffee beans.

These are then washed and laid out to dry for a couple of days...

Then you pound them to remove the shell...

...sift them...

...and then you have the actual coffee bean which you then...

...proceed to roast.

AH! : ) Our own roasted beans....smells soooo good!

We then grounded some. Our guide placed the grounds directly in the coffee cups and poured hot water over it. Once you let them brew for a little bit, the grounds sink to the bottom.

Amigo's International: Kira Farm Training Centre Opening....

On Saturday a group of us got the privilege to see a former EMI project's grand opening. Amigo's International Kira Farm Training Centre is near Gayaza. The Kira Farm Training Centre has a training facility to give the children a skill before they are sent out into the community and the site also incorporates agriculture to be able to feed the children' who are housed there. The ceremony was pretty much all afternoon with multiple speakers and performances throughout the afternoon.

Eritrean (Ethiopian-like) Coffee Ceremony

One of my roommates, Laura, has a friend, Mabrite, who is Eritrean. She invited us over for a Ertriean Coffee Ceremony. Eritrea is located near the horn of Africa on the Red Sea. Eritrea is between Ethiopia and the Red Sea, and some of the traditions are similar including the coffee ceremony for any who have undergone an Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony.

haha, I included this because i just look so bad! haha on the way to Mabrite's.

Basically she grinds the beans and pours the beans and hot water into the coffee kettle above and places it on the fire as well. Then it continues to boil and once it overflows you know it is ready. It is like an espresso and they put a lot of sugar in it, but it was very good.

Friday Craft Market is a market at Mukwano Roundabout here near city centre Kampala. We girls here favor this market because it is cheaper and you can bargain with them better then at the tourist craft market in the city. Lots of great gifts (definitely where all of my Christmas gifts are coming from)!

Orphanage Time in Jinja!

Half of our East Africa team is located in Jinja, which is the root of the Nile. We had Oct 9. off for Uganda's Independence Day so we decided to head to Jinja for the weekend. The boys are staying at an amazing house with a great porch and grounds. Across the street is an HIV orphanage that they have gotten involved with. They are building them a tree fort and we had the privilege of coming over and helping for an afternoon.

Safari Part 2- Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda

We were able to go on another safari trip at the end of September, this time one that last three days with the rest of the interns and then some. Our group totalled around 18 people and it definitely felt like we took over the base camp.

We took a four hour drive from Kampala up to our base camp in Murchison Falls National Park and arrived to climb near the top of the falls...

There is a pretty sweet video of this outcome of us running, ha but it's too big to post. Maybe I'll be able to show it sometime! Definitely an experience.

Highlights and Lowlights of Kenya

Highlights:

Safari- which is obvious why from the photos : )

Presentation day with the Bjork- just being able to see them realize they are accomplishing their mission and realizing that we helped them achieve it is such an amazing blessing

Closing time- just being able to rehash the week and share insights on each other- it is always sweet to see how God brings different individuals together to make a team. I love hearing what people had to say about each other- always so awesome.

Lowlights:

Robbing- Yes, that is correct, we were robbed. Wednesday morning our team went down for breakfast and all of us had left our computers and valuables in the room during the 15-30 minute breakfast time. During that time, 3 laptops, 1 projector, 1 phone, 1 I-Pod, 1 wallet with multiple credit cards, and about $820 in cash. That was an incredibly sad day, but I know that the Lord is teaching us something through that, and even through this set-back we were still able to finish every thing.

Not being able to experience a lot of Nakuru or even Kenya. I would love to be able to travel back to Kenya and see the people and the culture there sometime. That was not our main focus of the trip obviously so we weren’t able to experience that much, but it would be interesting just to see it. Especially after living in Uganda, I love seeing how the countries that are so close vary so much.

Welcome to Our Site! These two pictures are snapshots of our site. Definitely not in Uganda anymore.

Coming to Nakuru was a fresh take on scenery. We

had been used to red roads and green, green everywhere in Uganda, and we got to Nakuru and we were suddenly in the...midwest? Some of the farmland reminded us of the rolling plains of the midwest! But it was definitely refreshing to be able to see another part of this wonderful continent! The house is a picture of this English manor that is going to Miracle House's neighbor. We were able to receive a tour of it for free, which is great since they are turning it into a museum and tourist attraction and will start charging $10 per person, which here is a ridiculously high price. This wonderful old man was our tour guide!

Our Master Plan: This is the master plan for the final build out. The architects divided the site into multiple zones, with the entrance running along the west border of the site into the public zone, which includes the chapel, administration building and parking. A private zone was created directly to the west of this, where the international staff housing and the baby's home will be. This will have their own direct vehicular access and will be separated from the rest of the site through vegetation. You enter the children's home site directly south of the public zone on a pedestrian walkways and you will be directed on a path through more public areas including the guest/missionary housing, multi-purpose hall, dining hall, and educational centre. At the end of this path in the middle of the site is where the children's homes lay. A soccer pitch is shown to the west and the beginning of the agriculture is on the east. The agricultural fields flow down the site to the east towards the more service zone of the site. There is a service entrance on this site that will allow for public access to the vocational centre, the poultry and livestock and also allows access to water tanks. The national staff housing is also located on this side to allow separation from the rest of the site and their own entrance to the site.

The site will be developed in phases. Phase One buildings include two of the eight children's homes, one of the educational centre, two of the four national staff housing, and some toilet facilities. Below are perspectives of our Phase One buildings.

I know this only gives a little smattering of what the designs are. I could add more, but I don't know how interested people are in seeing them. But I wanted to include some idea of what we were designing! I hope you all enjoy!

This was the mission statement from Miracle House, the ministry that we were working with in Kenya. Deanna Bjork and her husband, Dan, founded this non-profit organization that seek to develop international children’s homes to care for orphans in a loving, Godly family environment. They currently have children’s homes in two different cities in Kenya: Webuye & Limuru. We were commissioned with developing the master plan for their base camp, which will be in Nakuru. We developed the master plan, which included 8 children’s homes, a pre-primary school, dining hall, chapel, and staff housing to name a few. The ministry also wanted to incorporate agriculture within their site to help support feeding the children.

We stopped by Webuye on our way to Nakuru. Some of the children sang for us, which was so great.

We were able to meet all of the children of Miracle House one day during the week. The Webuye kids drove 4 hours to meet at the site, and the Limuru kids drove probably 2 hours. Nakuru is in-between them and they came out to see where they will all be united together at Nakuru! For most of them it was their first time meeting each other. We were able to help dish out PB&J sandwiches to them.

But unfortunately it starting raining when we were on the site, which you will see later, does not have any shelter. So we all scrambled into the vans! Here's a great pic to showcase the chaos.

This kid made me smile so much! He wasn't use to white people so whenever we would go near him he would start crying. He has the best smile though, which I couldn't really capture. Deanna says that he doesn't even come to her yet. But his mom brought him over and he didn't cry! Woo-hoo! So I got a picture of him and his mom, with him somewhat happy. : )

Be prepared for updates! September has been a crazy month with lots of traveling and adventures to share. I will be updating these next couple days with posts from my project trip to Nakuru, Kenya. My team and I were in Nakuru from September 5th through September 13th on our project trip working with a mission organization called Miracle House. Here are some snapshots of the city/team/hotel, etc.

Welcome to Home aka EMI compound

Okay so I know that I am long overdue for some photos and updates. Here are some pictures of both EMI's office and the apartment I am staying in.

The entrance to my apartment which I share with three other girls. Two, Holly & Laura, are teachers at Heritage International School down the road, and my roommate Jen is working for a NGO nearby.

And right next door is the entrance to the office! EMI has a duplex with the girls apartment on one side and the office on the other, very convenient in case you forget anything!

Which means "how are you?" in Lugandan. Welcome to UGANDA! We finally made it to Kampala Wednesday morning after almost 18 hours of flying and two days of travel. Sorry for such a long delay posting, but the internet isn't exactly the best or most consistent here. I will update with photos soon.

But the past few days have been full of Kampala orientation including staff dinners (lots of different African foods including posho and matoke, both which are great!), and exploring the area.

Quick run through:

Welcome to The Hideaway! This is where we have been for the past week. All of the EMI interns have gathered here in Colorado Springs and spent the past week going through preparation sessions to help us prepare for our respective offices. There are around 30 interns here who are making their way to either Calgary, Canada; Costa Rica; Uganda; India, or staying here in Colorado Springs. The past week has been spent going through team building activities, small group discussions, and the like. We officially are flying out tomorrow! woo-hoo!

So I found at Target these self-laminating luggage tags, which I thought would be fun! : ) I don't remember where my luggage tags are, but it was $4 dollars for 4 tags, which seemed very reasonable and thus I proceeded to make some luggage tags with my Uganda address on them : )

So i decided to do a trial run of how much stuff I will be bring to Uganda : ) This is test number 1! It's hard for me to judge everything since I'm still in Virginia and some of my stuff is still at home in the MN, but here is my trial run! I think I will be able to fit everything in my suitcase plus my carry-on, it doesn't seem to be too much. Things to still consider are ah,hem clothing options (yes there is more than 7 days worth of clothing here, but to image wearing one week's worth of clothing for 17 weeks is kinda hard to think of! so i'm sure i'll bring probably two weeks worth : ), all the rendering tools (color pencils, watercolors...trying to decide if these will be useful or not), and i still haven't shown household items i will be bringing including any food and coffee (french press is a need), etc. But so far looking good!

Hello All!

Welcome to my blog I will be keeping while I am in Uganda. Now for most of the summer I will not be updating this quite that frequently, but I have it available now for my supporters, friends and families. A quick summary of my going ons to be, I will be living in Kampala, Uganda from mid-August through December. I am going to be an intern for Engineering Ministries International (EMI), which is a non-profit organization that pairs designers and engineers with mission organizations in the developing world to offer hope to those in need, showing Christ’s love through some of the most practical ways. I will be working at their field office in Kampala, Uganda help assisting in the designing and development of the current projects. I will be regularly (hopefully) updating this throughout my time in Uganda to keep you all informed of what God is teaching me through this wonderful opportunity.
